Sao Martinho Do Porto

Sao Martinho Do Porto sits on the edge of a spectacular shell shaped bay, protected from the Atlantic and is one of the top 10 beaches in Portugal, also one of the safest. Perfect for families and small children. The bay is surrounded by a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants with amazing views and breathtaking sunsets. It is also a very short drive to some of the most magnificent unspoilt beaches on the Silver Coast.

Places to eat in Sao Martinho Do Porto

Martinhos is a new English bar/cafe, Mary & Mike who run it are great hosts and the food is very good, all imported from the UK. Great views across the bay.  £

Pesca no Prato: Rua Cândido dos Reis, 29 Very good for fish, service was great and staff were very friendly.  £££

A Casa: We went on a quiet night, food good but lacked any atmosphere seemed to be busy at the weekends. Wines are more expensive than other restaurants we tried.  £££

Portobello: Italian restaurant. Very popular. busy, particularly at the weekends. Good value and friendly service. ££

Hotel Atlantico: very good for seafood. Waiters speak good English. Good selection of wines. Try to avoid the bacalau (salted cod)  ££

Oceano: popular with Portuguese for fixed price lunch, snacks and drinks.  £

O Farol: Great service, selection of fish & meat dishes. Good selection of wines.  We consider it to be the best restaurant in Sao Martinho Do Porto.  £££

Cafe Samar, nearby to the Tourist office beside cocktail bar - excellent for morning coffee/breakfast or lunch and very cheap.  £

Baia do Oeste - nice family restaurant. Best value in SMP with litre jug of house white at 3 euros 50 cent.  £

Royal Marina - Excellent fish and meat restaurant at end of bay. Take a walk through the tunnel to see the sunset before you dine.  £££

Restaurant Carvalho opposite tourist office is another offering good value. We particularly liked the meat cooked on the stone.  ££

nB. One of the best restaurants in the area can be found on the road between Salir Do Porto & Caldas Da Rainha with its speciality of wild boar. Excellent value for money. £

Eating out in Portugal

Food portions tend to be on the large side in Portugal. Many restaurants serve dishes which are known as ‘Dos’ meaning for two - which are best shared between 2 people. Starters & bread are normally brought out and placed on your table prior to ordering - you can choose to tuck in for which you will be charged (note that there is sometimes a surcharge for butter, per portion). Alternatively, you can ask for them to be taken away - your choice! House wines are either white, red or green (Vinho Verde). Vinho Verde is a speciality of the region made from young grapes - it is a fresh, dry light wine which has a lower percentage of alcohol than most red or white wines and a slight fizz. Prices for wines start from €3.00 per litre.
